GTL’s High-Pressure Hydrogen Transport Solution Fuels The Sea Change

The GTM-1500 provided a flexible and cost-effective solution for the Sea Change ferry's hydrogen fueling needs, enabling the launch of one of the world's first hydrogen-powered ferries.

The Sea Change ferry represents a pioneering step towards sustainable maritime transportation. As the developer and vessel owner, SWITCH Maritime faced the challenge of establishing a reliable and flexible fueling supply chain for the first-of-a-kind project. SWITCH engaged West Coast Clean Fuels (WCCF) to develop and permit the end to-end clean fuel supply chain that delivers hydrogen to the Sea Change. A critical element of the clean fuel supply chain, high pressure hydrogen transport, was provided to WCCF by GTL Leasing with the GTM-1500 hydrogen transport trailer.

The Challenge

The Sea Change required a hydrogen fueling solution that was not only cost-effective but also adaptable to the specific demands of ferry operations. Establishing a hydrogen-powered ferry service presented unique challenges in terms of supply chain and fuel logistics, necessitating a flexible and reliable fueling solution.

The Solution

GTL Leasing provided a crucial component of WCCF’s fuel supply chain for the groundbreaking project: the GTM-1500 high-pressure hydrogen transport trailer. This compact yet high-capacity trailer offered a cost-effective, flexible, and efficient mobile solution for truck-to-ship fueling.

Reduced Capital Expenditure

By incorporating the GTM-1500, WCCF avoided the substantial upfront capital costs associated with purchasing hydrogen storage and fueling equipment.

Flexible Fueling Sourcing

The GTM-1500’s mobility enabled Sea Change to source hydrogen from various locations, ensuring a consistent fuel supply for the ferry. This adaptability was crucial in a developing hydrogen market.

Small Footprint

The trailer’s compact size made it suitable for operations in space-constrained areas, such as ferry terminals, where larger trailers might be impractical.

High-Volume Capacity

The GTM-1500’s substantial storage capacity met the fueling requirements of the Sea Change ferry, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Cost-Effective Solution

Leasing the GTM-1500 provided Sea Change with a financially viable option for hydrogen transportation and storage, minimizing operational costs.

The Results

The successful integration of the GTL Leasing GTM-1500 into WCCF’s hydrogen fuel supply chain for the Sea Change demonstrates the value of flexible and cost-effective leasing solutions.

By mitigating initial capital expenditures and offering operational adaptability, GTL Leasing played a pivotal role in enabling Sea Change to accelerate the decarbonization of maritime transportation.
