GTL’s GTM 1500: Paving the Way for Hydrogen-Powered Waste Collection

GTL Leasing played a crucial role supporting Hyzon's new fuel cell waste collection truck by providing a GTM 1500 for the project's testing, fueling, and demonstration phases.

The Hyzon fuel cell electric refuse collection vehicle, developed in partnership with New Way Trucks, is a sustainable alternative to its diesel counterpart. Powered by hydrogen, it eliminates emissions, improves air quality and demonstrates the potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the refuse industry. GTL Leasing played a pivotal role in supporting this project by providing the GTM 1500 hydrogen transport trailer for the project’s testing, fueling, and demonstration phases.

By working closely with Hyzon, GTL Leasing and the project partners, including Pilot Company providing hauling service, were able to tailor a hydrogen fueling solution to meet the specific needs of the refuse truck and enable the vehicle’s first commercial trial with Recology.

The Challenge

One of the primary challenges faced by the project was the need to develop a reliable and efficient hydrogen fueling infrastructure. The GTM 1500 transport trailers provided a valuable solution to this challenge by offering an easy to use, flexible and scalable option for hydrogen storage and transportation.

The Solution

GTL Leasing’s GTM 1500 transport trailers were instrumental in providing a reliable and flexible hydrogen fueling solution for the project. These transport trailers offered several key advantages:

Cost Effectiveness

The GTM 1500 transport trailer provided a cost-effective solution for hydrogen fueling, reducing the upfront capital expenditure for the project.

Flexible Fueling Sourcing

The transport trailers could be easily refilled from various hydrogen sources, ensuring flexibility and minimizing downtime.

Interim Solution

As the hydrogen ecosystem and production infrastructure continue to develop, the GTM 1500 transport trailers offered a valuable interim solution for fueling the refuse truck.

Small Footprint

The trailer’s compact size made it suitable for operations in space-constrained areas where larger trailers might be impractical.

High-Volume Capacity

The GTM-1500’s substantial storage capacity met the fueling requirements of the refuse truck and Class 8 trucks, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

The Results

The collaboration between Hyzon, New Way Trucks, Recology, Pilot and GTL Leasing represents a significant step forward in the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the waste collection industry. The GTM 1500 transport trailers played a crucial role in enabling the successful testing and demonstration of the fuel cell refuse truck. By providing a flexible, efficient, and cost-effective fueling solution, GTL Leasing was a major contributor to the project’s overall success.

As the hydrogen ecosystem continues to evolve, GTL Leasing is well-positioned to support future initiatives in this exciting field. GTL Leasing has also supported a Hyzon Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck trial in Carson, CA which was one of the first deployments of Hyzon’s 200kW fuel cell in a Class 8 truck for a customer trial.

Thanks to a Tandem520 transport trailer from GTL Leasing and hauling from Pilot, that truck will be put into customer trails across the country this fall. GTL Leasing continues to be a vital partner to Hyzon’s success in early customer trials and demonstrations.
